Healthy Homes Insulation for Rentals
Ceiling and underfloor insulation is compulsory in rental homes under the Healthy Homes standards. The Conduction Company tops up and reinstates insulation and arranges full ceiling and underfloor installs, but it does not assess insulation against the Healthy Homes insulation standard. For that, get a Healthy Homes report from a specialist Healthy Homes company, which covers every standard and is what a landlord relies on at the Tenancy Tribunal. The Conduction Company checks a rental's heating and ventilation against their standards, and it never tells a landlord that a tenancy is exempt.
Insulation With Heating and Ventilation
Insulation on its own only does half the job. The Conduction Company packages insulation together with heat pumps and ventilation, because keeping heat in, making heat, and moving moisture out are one problem rather than three.
Insulation Around Electrical Work

What is the best house insulation in New Zealand?
There is no single best material: The Conduction Company's advice is the highest R-value that fits the space, installed with no gaps. MBIE's Smarter Homes guide to insulation materials says "the higher the R-value, the better the insulation will be", and that it must be properly installed to work. Glass wool, polyester and wool blankets all suit ceilings, walls and floors, and polyester performs much like glass wool for the same thickness. Rigid polystyrene gives slightly higher R-values for the same thickness, and in an existing home it mainly goes under suspended timber floors.
The ceiling is usually the easiest and most effective place to start, EECA advises, then the underfloor. Foil is out: MBIE has banned installing or repairing foil insulation in homes with an existing electrical installation since 1 July 2016. Can I get a free insulation grant in New Zealand?
Usually not free, but often close, is The Conduction Company's reading of EECA's Warmer Kiwi Homes grant rules. The programme pays 90% of the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation for Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo card holders and homes in high-need areas, 80% in certain areas, and 50% in middle-income areas. In some areas a community organisation tops the grant up, which EECA says could mean paying "even less, or nothing at all".
You must own and live in the home, it must have been built before 2008, and it must not already have ceiling and underfloor insulation. Rentals are excluded. The programme is funded to 30 June 2027, and nothing is confirmed beyond that date.

Can you tell me if my rental meets the Healthy Homes insulation standard?
No. The Conduction Company does not assess insulation against the Healthy Homes insulation standard. A specialist Healthy Homes company does that as part of a full Healthy Homes report, and that report is what a landlord relies on at the Tenancy Tribunal. The Conduction Company can tell you the state of the insulation that is there now, top it up, and arrange a full ceiling or underfloor install.
Do you do heating and ventilation as well?
Yes. The Conduction Company installs heat pumps and home ventilation systems, and insulation is offered alongside them, because heat that is made still needs to be kept in and moisture still needs somewhere to go.
Do downlights have to be kept clear of insulation?
Yes, and it matters. Covering the wrong fitting is a fire risk. The Conduction Company keeps the required clearance around fittings and fans, and where old downlights are the problem we will tell you what it would take to replace them with something that can be covered.
Can insulation be done at the same time as other work?
That is usually the cheapest way to do it. The Conduction Company is already in the ceiling for downlights, extract fans, or rewiring, so reinstating and topping up insulation while we are up there avoids a second trip.
Can you tell me if my insulation is any good?
Yes. The Conduction Company assesses what is there now, including whether it has been compressed, pulled back, or damaged, and tells you the best way forward. Advice is our own, not a subcontractor's.
