Switchboard Replacement in Auckland
Will a new switchboard stop my breakers tripping?
Not on its own, and that is the honest answer. A modern board with RCDs makes a trip safer and far easier to trace, but if the cause is a faulty appliance, moisture in a circuit, or damaged wiring, that fault still has to be found and fixed. The Conduction Company tests every circuit while the board is out, so if something in the house is causing the trip, that is when it shows up.
Can I replace the switchboard without rewiring the whole house?
In most cases yes. A replacement swaps the board and its protective devices, not the wiring inside your walls, so The Conduction Company can bring the board up to a modern standard while sound existing wiring stays where it is. Where testing shows a circuit is not safe to reconnect, we tell you before we do anything and price that separately.
How long is my power off during a switchboard replacement?
The Conduction Company replaces a standard home switchboard within a day. Your power is off for the part of that day when the old board comes out and the new one goes in, not for the whole visit. We agree the timing with you first so you can plan around anything that cannot lose power.
Does a switchboard replacement need an independent inspection?
It depends on whether the job includes mains work. Mains work is high risk prescribed electrical work under regulation 6A of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, and all high risk work must be inspected and have a written record of inspection. Because Jordan Statham at The Conduction Company is a registered Electrical Inspector as well as a registered Electrician, that inspection is handled in house by someone who did not carry out or certify the work, which is what regulation 71 requires.
Does a new switchboard mean RCD safety switches on my circuits?
On a full replacement, yes. AS/NZS 3000:2018 clause 2.6.3.3.4 says that where all of the circuit protection on a switchboard is replaced, RCD protection must be provided for the final subcircuits supplied from that switchboard. The Conduction Company fits those RCDs at the switchboard the subcircuits originate from, which is where the standard requires them, and labels every device before we leave.
Do I get a certificate when my switchboard is replaced?
Yes. Under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 a certificate of compliance must be issued for all general and high risk prescribed electrical work, and the work is not treated as complete until it is issued. The Conduction Company issues that certificate on every switchboard replacement and gives you a copy within 20 days of finishing, which is what regulation 74E requires. We keep our own copy for at least 7 years, the minimum retention period in the same regulation.
