Can I swap old downlights for LEDs without rewiring?
In most cases yes, because it is the fitting that changes rather than the wiring in the ceiling. The Conduction Company replaces the fitting and checks that the existing circuit and any dimmer suit the new lamps, since a dimmer built for halogen is a common cause of LED flicker. Where the old fittings have left the ceiling insulation pushed back around them, we sort that out at the same time.
Why do my lights flicker or dim when an appliance starts?
It is usually one of three things: a loose connection, a circuit carrying more than it comfortably should, or a dimmer that does not suit the LED lamps on it. Does adding a new power point mean I need an RCD?
Yes, on the new work. AS/NZS 3000:2018 clause 2.6.3.3.4 requires socket outlets added to an existing circuit to be protected by an RCD to the same standard as a new subcircuit. The Conduction Company installs that protection at the switchboard where the circuit originates, which is what the standard prefers, and prices it into the quote so it is not a surprise on the day.
Can I install a power point myself in my own home?
Some domestic wiring work is allowed under section 79 of the Electricity Act 1992 if you own and live in the premises, but the same section requires that work to be tested and certified by a registered person holding a current practising licence before it is connected to a power supply, and connected by that person. Regulation 57 of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 sets the limits on what the work can be and requires it to be done in accordance with ECP 51. The point The Conduction Company makes to homeowners is that the exemption is narrower than it first looks, because the testing and the connection are not part of what you are allowed to do yourself.
