Smart home installation in Auckland

The Conduction Company does smart home installation and home automation in Auckland, fitting Shelly relays and the PDL Wiser system into your home's wiring. Most jobs make lights, blinds, power points or the hot water cylinder run from your phone or on a schedule.

The Conduction Company's most common smart home job is a Wi-Fi relay that times the hot water cylinder. The cylinder then heats only when power costs less. Most existing houses can go smart without rewiring, The Conduction Company finds. Whole-home systems are mostly fitted on new builds.

Thinking About Making Your Home Smart?

  • Hot water heating on expensive power
  • Solar power going to the grid when you could use it
  • Lights you want on a schedule or your phone
  • Blinds you want to run themselves
  • An old automation system nobody can use
  • Smart switches bought online, with no paperwork

The Conduction Company fits Shelly relays and PDL Wiser into existing wiring, so most homes need no rewiring, and certifies the electrical work when it is done.

The smart home advice on this page comes from Jordan Statham, director of The Conduction Company, a registered electrician and electrical inspector. Whether automation is worth it, how hubs work, and what happens when the Wi-Fi drops are covered in The Conduction Company's guide to home automation for Auckland homes.

What does smart home installation include?

Switching and control of almost any electrical fitting in your home, using the two systems The Conduction Company stands behind. Shelly relays join your Wi-Fi directly, and PDL Wiser runs through a hub connected to your router. "They've just got the best reputation, and we know from previous installation work that they work the best," Jordan Statham says. The work The Conduction Company does most:

  • A Wi-Fi timer on the hot water cylinder, set from your phone to heat when power is cheaper
  • Lighting control in the Wiser app, with mood settings and schedules
  • Blinds that open and close on the Wiser system
  • Power points and appliances that switch on at set times
  • Shelly relays paired with a solar power system, so appliances run while the panels are producing
  • A Wiser module on the garage door, with an alert if it is left open
  • Replacing or removing an old automation system that no longer works

Most existing houses take smart switches without rewiring. The exception is two-way switching in a house with no ceiling or underfloor space to work in, where new cable may be needed. On a new build, The Conduction Company runs the cabling for smart switches at the build stage, especially where lights are switched from two or three places. For high-end systems such as Control4 or Crestron, it takes the job on and brings in specialist contractors for the programming. All of it sits alongside The Conduction Company's power and lighting work across Auckland.

How much does smart home installation cost?

It depends on how much of the house you want to control, and The Conduction Company prices each job once it knows that. Every extra relay or smart switch adds to the cost, and so do more lighting banks, more power points and a bigger house. One relay for a set of lounge lights or the hot water cylinder is a small job. A whole-home system that controls every light and power point costs significantly more. Quotes are typically free, so ask The Conduction Company for a smart home quote with a list of what you want to control.

Can The Conduction Company install smart devices you have already bought?

Yes, if the device comes with the right documentation, The Conduction Company can install it. It still prefers to supply the devices itself. It can be sure of their safety, the price is typically the same or lower because of its supplier discounts, and it covers the warranty, labour included.

What The Conduction Company will not fit is a device with no proof that it meets a safety standard, such as a cheap relay from an overseas website. That is not a legal ban on the device. It is because the electrician signs for the work. Under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, a certificate of compliance states that the work "has been done lawfully and safely". The Conduction Company will not sign that for a device it cannot vouch for. AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, lets equipment carrying the RCM mark, a tick inside a triangle, be presumed to meet its safety requirement. Jordan Statham has been to at least three homes where a cheap relay the owner had fitted started a fire. The Conduction Company says any smart switch or relay should be fitted by an electrician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smart home installation in Auckland

Do you need a smart home hub?

Not always, says The Conduction Company. Shelly relays join your Wi-Fi directly and need no hub, but each one needs a steady Wi-Fi signal where it sits in the wall. The PDL Wiser system runs through a hub that connects to your router.

What happens to a smart home when the Wi-Fi or internet drops?

The systems The Conduction Company installs go back to working like ordinary switches, Jordan Statham says, so the lights still work. Of the PDL Wiser switches he says: "They don't need Wi-Fi to continue to operate."

Is home automation worth it?

For most ordinary Auckland families it is a nice to have rather than a need, in The Conduction Company's experience. It suits technology fans and high-end homes best. Solving one problem, such as timing the hot water cylinder, is where most clients start.
