One 8-zone amplifier in the server room drives them all, so each area plays the same music at its own volume. Why have my speakers stopped working, or cut out?
The fault can be in the speaker, in the cable run to it, or in the amplifier output driving it, so The Conduction Company traces the cabling from the amplifier to each speaker to find which. On one Auckland surround sound system, the two speakers that had stopped working turned out to be run from a different zone on the amplifier.
Is it safe to use speaker cable for power?
No. Cable used for mains wiring in a home carries an insulation rating of 450/750 V or 600/1000 V marked on its sheath, and NZECP 51 says never to use cables designed for extra-low voltage applications, such as telecommunications cables, in a 230 V installation. Speaker cable is made for audio, not mains power. The Conduction Company has found it used as mains wiring on two Auckland inspections, single insulated, not rated for mains, and a fire and shock risk.
