Kelray: the heater The Conduction Company recommends
Kelray makes its infrared heaters in New Zealand from marine-grade 316 stainless steel, in nine models from 2 kW to 8 kW. Kelray says 316 stands up to salt air better than the 304 grade used in most outdoor heaters, which counts in a city built around two harbours. The Conduction Company has installed Kelray heaters for Auckland clients since 2023, and it is the heater it recommends.

What is included
Every Kelray heater The Conduction Company supplies and installs comes with:
- The heater in stainless steel, with black or white powdercoat as an option
- Fixing to a wall or soffit at the height Kelray specifies for that model
- A new dedicated circuit from the switchboard, with the breaker and cable sized to the heater
- Cable in white surface-mounted conduit, run the least conspicuous way
- An outdoor isolating switch on the wall at an easy height, to turn the heater on and off
- The heater hardwired into place, tested, and certified
The final position depends on the structure and on Kelray's clearances. If the planned spot will not work, The Conduction Company talks you through the options before anything is fixed.
Which size you need
Size comes down to the area you want warm and how high the heater can go. The Conduction Company sizes every Kelray heater from Kelray's coverage guide (1 July 2025). For an open or part-enclosed area, Kelray's figures are:
I-20, 2 kW: warms about 2.25 x 2.25 m. Wall or soffit at 2.0 to 2.5 m, or overhead at 2.8 to 3.2 m.
I-24 and I-25, 2.4 and 2.5 kW: about 2.5 x 2.5 m. Wall or soffit at 2.0 to 2.6 m, or overhead at 2.9 to 3.4 m.
I-30, 3 kW: about 3 x 3 m. Wall or soffit at 2.1 to 2.7 m, or overhead at 3.0 to 4.0 m.
I-40, 4 kW: about 3.5 x 3.5 m. Wall or soffit at 2.3 to 3.0 m, or overhead at 3.5 to 4.5 m.
ID-40, 4 kW, dual element: about 4 x 3 m. Wall or soffit at 2.4 to 3.2 m, or overhead at 3.8 to 5.0 m.
ID-50, 5 kW, dual element: about 4.5 x 3.25 m. Wall or soffit at 2.4 to 3.2 m, or overhead at 4.0 to 5.5 m.
ID-60, 6 kW, dual element: about 4.5 x 4.5 m. Wall or soffit at 2.6 to 3.5 m, or overhead at 4.2 to 5.5 m.
ID-80, 8 kW, dual element: about 5 x 5 m. Wall or soffit at 3.0 to 4.0 m, or overhead at 4.8 to 6.0 m.
Kelray rates each model for a larger area when the space is fully enclosed, and suggests allowing for wind and for whether people sit or stand, which The Conduction Company asks about before it recommends a size.
What it costs to run
Multiply the heater's kilowatts by your price per kWh. MBIE's Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices for 15 August 2026 puts Auckland at 41.3 cents per kWh, including GST. On that figure, The Conduction Company works out that a 2 kW I-20 costs about 83 cents an hour at full power, a 4 kW I-40 about $1.65, and the 8 kW ID-80 about $3.30, all including GST. MBIE's figure spreads the daily charge across every unit, so your own plan's price per kWh will usually give a slightly lower number.
Already bought a heater?
The Conduction Company installs outdoor heaters clients have bought from a New Zealand retailer, as long as the heater is made for outdoor use. A small heater can sometimes go on an existing circuit, once The Conduction Company has checked what else that circuit carries; a larger one needs a new dedicated circuit. Either way it goes up to its maker's instructions, as the Wiring Rules, AS/NZS 3000 clause 1.7.2, require. The heater's own warranty stays with whoever sold it, and The Conduction Company's guarantee covers its workmanship.
Heaters for cafes, bars, and restaurants
The Conduction Company installs outdoor heaters for hospitality venues too, where several heaters share one outdoor area. It sizes each heater to its part of the space, works out the circuits across your switchboard, and quotes each site after seeing it, so commercial work has no set price. It has already run new power for the outdoor heaters under a cafe's louvre roof in Eden Terrace.
Where a heater can go
Kelray's installation manual (version 2.4, August 2026) sets the clearances, and AS/NZS 3000 clause 1.7.2 requires installers to follow the supplier's instructions, so these are the rules The Conduction Company works to:
At least 1.8 m above the floor.
Nothing within 800 mm of the front of the heater, and at least 1 m from curtains or anything else that could blow onto it.
At least 450 mm from a side wall.
At least 150 mm below anything combustible, such as a canvas awning, or 100 mm below a non-combustible surface.
Flush in a ceiling only with Kelray's recess kit, inside a fire box rated to at least one hour.
That is why The Conduction Company checks the spot before it quotes.
Electric only
The Conduction Company installs electric outdoor heaters only. It does not install, connect, or service gas heaters.
A heater in Onehunga, in time for a party
In September 2025 an Onehunga client asked The Conduction Company for a powdercoated Kelray heater, and wanted it working for a party on 8 November. Powdercoating adds time to Kelray's build, so the heater was ordered on 6 October and arrived on 31 October. The team installed it in the first week of November, before the party. The quote allowed three hours of labour and the job took six. The client paid the quoted price, and The Conduction Company absorbed the other three hours.
Warranty, stated exactly
The Conduction Company supplies Kelray heaters with Kelray's own warranty: a limited five-year warranty on the heater from the date of purchase, for the original owner. The elements are covered for one year against factory defects and the rear reflectors for two years. The powdercoat finish is not covered by Kelray's warranty: powdercoat issues fall under the Consumer Guarantees Act, or a period of no more than 60 days from purchase. Kelray also requires its heaters to be installed by a suitably qualified person, to its instructions.
The Conduction Company backs its installation with a guarantee on its workmanship for the life of the installation. If a heater it supplied fails within Kelray's warranty, The Conduction Company covers the labour to replace it.

Is an electric infrared heater better than a gas patio heater?
The Conduction Company installs electric heaters only and does not work on gas, so it is not neutral here. An electric infrared heater has no gas bottle to refill. Kelray says infrared warms people rather than the air, so wind takes less of the heat away, and that it uses no oxygen and gives off no emissions.
Does an outdoor heater need its own circuit?
The Conduction Company puts every Kelray heater on a new dedicated circuit as standard, with the breaker and cable sized to the model. On Kelray's figures they draw from 8.3 amps for the 2 kW I-20 to 33.4 amps for the 8 kW ID-80. A small heater can sometimes run from an existing circuit, once The Conduction Company has checked what else that circuit already carries. If it is safe, the quote says so, and it costs less.
How high does an outdoor heater need to be mounted?
At least 1.8 m above the floor, under Kelray's installation manual, and usually higher. Kelray's coverage guide puts its heaters at 2.0 to 4.0 m on a wall or soffit and 2.8 to 6.0 m overhead, depending on the model. Can you install an outdoor heater under a pergola, awning, or louvre roof?
Yes, where Kelray's clearances fit: at least 150 mm below anything combustible, such as a canvas awning, or 100 mm below a non-combustible surface. The Conduction Company runs the cable in conduit along the structure without getting in the way of the louvres.

Kelray also says never to cover a heater unless the power to it is off at the switchboard first.
How long does it take from order to install?
Kelray builds each heater to order. Kelray says stainless heaters ship in 7 to 10 days and powdercoated ones in 2 to 3 weeks. The Conduction Company books the install once the heater arrives.
Do I get a certificate for the heater installation?
Yes. Connecting a heater to the power other than by a plug is prescribed electrical work under Schedule 1 of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, and regulation 65 says work like this is not complete until a certificate of compliance is issued. The Conduction Company issues it, and an electrical safety certificate once the heater is connected.
