How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in NZ?

What a switchboard upgrade costs at The Conduction Company, what moves the price, plus the two charges people never see coming.

Most cost guides for this job are guesswork. This one gives The Conduction Company's own price for a switchboard upgrade, and the detail behind it comes out of switchboard quotes it actually sent to Auckland clients between 2023 and 2026.

The estimates below are for standard installation of a new switchboard. The Conduction Company confirms final pricing after a property assessment.

A switchboard upgrade from The Conduction Company costs $2,000 to $4,500 including GST. That is The Conduction Company's set price for the switchboard work on its own. It is not an average of past jobs, and it is not a whole-job total. The type of installation, covered below, is the biggest thing that moves the price.

What The Conduction Company's own switchboard jobs show

The Conduction Company has completed 53 switchboard installation jobs since March 2023, counted from its own job records. 41 were full switchboard replacements or upgrades. 6 replaced the protection devices (RCDs or RCBOs) in a board that stayed. 4 were meterboards, and 2 moved the board to a new wall. The counts describe the work The Conduction Company has done, not what each job cost. The price is the set price above.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

A typical switchboard job at The Conduction Company is one day on site. Across its 53 completed switchboard jobs, the median was one day on site and 8.5 hours of labour, counting everyone on the crew. Hours were recorded on 52 of the 53 jobs (98%). The jobs that ran longer were almost always the ones that combined the board with a rewire, a heat pump, or an EV charger. The board itself did not take longer.

Why the price is for the board, not the whole job

One detail matters more than it sounds. The Conduction Company's range is the switchboard work, not the total of a quote that carries other work. Clients often bundle a switchboard with air conditioning, ventilation, an EV charger or a rewire, and then the board work sits inside a much bigger number. One quote The Conduction Company sent came to $34,260 including GST, of which the switchboard was $2,807 including GST. Reading that job as a $34,260 switchboard would be nonsense, and it is exactly how bad cost guides get written.

So what you are looking at is the price of the board work, separated out. If your job includes other work, add it on top.

What kind of installation do you have?

This is the single biggest driver, and most people do not know which one they have until an electrician looks. It comes down to how the board sits in the wall, and whether your power meter lives inside it.

On The Conduction Company's quotes, a surface-mounted board, sitting on the wall, is the cheapest type. A board recessed into the wall costs more. A board with the energy meter inside it costs more again, and relocating a meterboard from outside to inside comes in highest of all.

Recessed costs more because the board is set into the wall rather than bolted onto it, which means cutting the wall open and making it good afterwards. It looks far better, and The Conduction Company recommends it for owner-occupied homes, particularly where the board sits somewhere you have to look at every day.

The plaster repair people forget to budget for

Recessing usually means plasterboard work: patching, plastering, sanding and painting. On The Conduction Company's jobs that has run $800 to $900 including GST on top of the board itself. It is worth knowing about in advance, because a quote that does not mention it either is not doing it, or is going to.

Why a small house is not half the price of a big one

People assume the price scales with the number of circuits. It does not, and the reason is worth understanding before you compare two quotes.

About $1,600 including GST of the cost is there before a single protective device is counted. That is the enclosure, the main switch, the mains reconnection, re-terminating and labelling every circuit, then testing and certifying. A three bedroom house and a five bedroom house both need all of it. The extra devices in the bigger house are the cheap part.

Which is why The Conduction Company will not publish a price per circuit breaker, even though it would be an easy number to give. The data looks like it supports one, and it does not. Board sizes are described in "ways", meaning how many module spaces the enclosure has, and that is not the same as how many circuits are actually fitted. In The Conduction Company's quote data, a 30-way enclosure carrying 7 circuits works out far cheaper per way than a 12-way meterboard. The per-way figure is not measuring the work. It is measuring how empty the box is.

A tidy number that misleads you is worse than no number, so The Conduction Company gives one set price for the board and explains what moves the price instead.

If the meter is in your switchboard, there are two charges and one of them is not ours

This is the part that catches people out, and it is the biggest single jump in what a switchboard costs.

Where the energy meter sits inside the switchboard, the meter has to be shifted before the board can be replaced. Two separate charges follow, from two different companies, shown here as The Conduction Company has seen them, including GST.

The inspection and paperwork. Billed by The Conduction Company, on the quote. A network-verified inspector, compiling the record of inspection, and lodging the work on the Energy Safety high risk database, around $480 including GST on average.

The meter shift itself. Billed by your energy retailer, on your power bill. The retailer's own charge, typically $100 to $350 including GST.

The second charge has a catch that has nothing to do with money. The meter shift has to be requested by the account holder, which is you. The Conduction Company cannot make that call on your behalf, and it is the only part of the whole job that is not ours to handle. We tell clients about it at quoting time rather than at the end, because a job can sit waiting on a phone call nobody knew they had to make.

When you do not need a whole new board

Sometimes the answer is not a replacement. If a board is otherwise sound and the problem is one or two old devices, The Conduction Company can swap them individually. Replacing a porcelain fuse with a modern circuit breaker has run $170 to $310 including GST per device.

There is a limit to how far that goes. AS/NZS 3000:2018, the wiring standard New Zealand electricians work to, states at clause 2.4.3 that "semi-enclosed rewireable fuses shall not be used", so an old fuse cannot simply be replaced with another one. Once enough devices need doing, the arithmetic tips toward a new board, and you get RCD protection and spare capacity out of it rather than paying twice.

Whether that applies to your board is a different question from what it costs. The Conduction Company has written up how to tell whether you need a switchboard upgrade at all, including the cabling question that decides whether a board swap is the whole job.

Rewiring and a new switchboard often go together. Of the 10 whole or partial house rewires The Conduction Company has completed since March 2023, 7 also replaced the switchboard. If the cabling in your home is old as well as the board, The Conduction Company's house rewiring services in Auckland cover that side of the job.

What is already in the price, and the one thing that is not

A quote from The Conduction Company covers the board, the labour, the certification, and organising the lines company where the power has to be disconnected at the street. There is no council consent and no building consent involved in a switchboard upgrade, so there is no council fee to find. On some upgrades a second certificate is issued, a Record of Inspection, because that work has to be independently inspected under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010. Where that applies it is priced into the quote up front.

The single genuine unknown is worth stating plainly, because The Conduction Company would rather you heard it now than on the day. Once new protection goes in and the power comes back on, faults that already existed on your circuits can trip it for the first time. The old protection was letting them through. The new protection is not. Those faults are real, they were there before we arrived, and finding them is the system working. It is also the one thing that can extend a job, and it cannot be priced in advance because nobody can see it until the board is live.

Everything else is priced before we start.

Why the cheapest quote is not always the cheapest job

The Conduction Company has been called to several Auckland properties where a previous electrician had replaced the board and supposedly rewired the house. The board looked modern. Then, up in the roof space, only the cable running up and down the wall behind the board had been replaced, and every other circuit was still the original cable.

In each case the homeowner had taken the cheapest quote, which promised a full rewire for a few thousand dollars less than the others. They ended up paying for it twice.

In short

The Conduction Company's set price for a switchboard upgrade is $2,000 to $4,500 including GST, for the board work on its own rather than a whole-job total. The type of installation moves the price most, and a meter inside the board brings an inspection charge on our quote plus a separate meter-shift fee from your energy retailer. Based on The Conduction Company's own 53 completed switchboard jobs since March 2023, a typical job is one day on site. The one cost nobody can price in advance is an existing fault that the new protection trips for the first time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in NZ?

The Conduction Company's set price for a switchboard upgrade in Auckland is $2,000 to $4,500 including GST, for the switchboard work on its own. It is a price, not an average of past jobs. A surface-mounted board is the cheapest type, a recessed board costs more, and a board with the energy meter inside it costs more again, because the meter has to be shifted first.

Why is a switchboard upgrade so expensive for a small house?

Because about $1,600 including GST of the cost is there before a single protective device is counted. That covers the enclosure, the main switch, reconnecting the mains, re-terminating and labelling every circuit, then testing and certifying. A small house needs all of it, so The Conduction Company does not price switchboard work per circuit breaker.

What does it cost to move a meter for a switchboard upgrade?

There are two charges. The Conduction Company's covers the network-verified inspector, the record of inspection and the Energy Safety database lodgement, averaging around $480 including GST. Separately your energy retailer charges for the meter shift itself, typically $100 to $350 including GST, and that request has to be made by you as the account holder.

Is it cheaper to replace just the fuses instead of the whole switchboard?

Sometimes. The Conduction Company has replaced individual porcelain fuses with modern circuit breakers for $170 to $310 including GST per device. AS/NZS 3000:2018 clause 2.4.3 states that semi-enclosed rewireable fuses shall not be used, so an old fuse cannot be replaced with another one. Past a few devices, a new board usually costs less than doing them one at a time.

Are there any surprise costs on a switchboard upgrade?

One, and The Conduction Company tells clients about it before starting. Once new protection goes in, faults that already existed on your circuits can trip it for the first time, because the old protection was letting them through. Nobody can see those until the board is live. Everything else, including certification and organising the lines company, is priced up front.
