What does a heat pump service include?
A basic service from The Conduction Company is a clean and a check, and a comprehensive service adds refrigerant, airflow and electrical tests. The two alternate year to year, so you are not paying for the full set of tests every time.
Basic service. The condensate drain swept, the fins of the indoor and outdoor units cleared and disinfected, the filters cleaned, and general checks that the unit is working as it should.
Comprehensive service. Everything in the basic service, plus a check of how well the drain flows, refrigerant level and pressure testing, airflow and set temperature testing, and electrical testing. The Conduction Company recommends it when the last service was a basic one, or was more than two years ago.
Ducted system. The same work, done in the ceiling space. The team also checks that the ducting joints are sealed and tight, so the system is not losing air pressure, cleans or replaces the return air filters, and cleans the vents. A comprehensive ducted service adds outlet pressure testing and balances the airflow.
Deep clean. For a unit with black mould or a heavy build-up of dust. The team pumps the refrigerant back into the outdoor unit, takes the indoor unit off the wall, and cleans every part before refitting and testing it. The Conduction Company quotes a deep clean on the unit, because it costs significantly more than a service.
If a service finds the refrigerant low, The Conduction Company tells you the cost of a top-up before going ahead. How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year, The Conduction Company recommends, alternating a basic service with a comprehensive one. The team books it from the date the heat pump was installed, starting with a basic service a year after installation. Clean the filters yourself in between: every month in a dusty home, and at least every change of season otherwise. If the unit starts to smell when you switch it to heating, The Conduction Company brings the service forward and keeps that new date for the years after.

Should a landlord service tenants' heat pumps every year?

Tenancy Services says that where technical knowledge or tools are needed, the landlord is generally required to maintain the heating device, and a yearly service is how The Conduction Company suggests landlords meet that.
Do heat pump warranties depend on regular servicing?
Some do, in writing. Gree's New Zealand warranty card says the warranty is void if maintenance is not carried out at intervals not exceeding 12 months by a qualified refrigeration and air conditioning tradesperson. Is cleaning a heat pump a job you can do yourself?
