The estimates below are for a standard caravan electrical WOF.

A caravan electrical WOF, or warrant of electrical fitness, proves a caravan, motorhome, transportable or food truck is safe to plug in, for up to four years. The Conduction Company's registered Electrical Inspector issues them across Auckland for $298.89 including GST on site, or $149.39 including GST in Onehunga.

Turned away from a powered site?

  • The campground asked to see your sticker
  • You have bought a used caravan or motorhome
  • Your van is going on a hire fleet
  • A tiny home or cabin needs a powered site
  • Your food truck is booked for a market
  • Someone has done electrical work in the van

Each of these comes back to the same check. The Conduction Company inspects and tests the van's electrical installation, issues the warrant when it passes, and fixes it when it does not. It is one of the services on The Conduction Company's electrical inspection and certification page.

What is an electrical warrant of fitness?

An electrical warrant of fitness is a check that a caravan's electrical installation is safe to plug in. The Conduction Company's director, Jordan Statham, puts it simply: "Like a warrant of fitness, but instead of mechanically safe, it's electrically safe."

The Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 call it a warrant of electrical fitness, or WoEF. Electrical WOF, EWOF and caravan WOF are all the same document, and so is a caravan electrical certificate. It covers anything with its own wiring that plugs into someone else's supply, which AS/NZS 3001.2 calls a connectable installation, The Conduction Company explains.

Who needs a caravan electrical WOF?

The Conduction Company's honest answer: the rules put the check on whoever supplies the power. Regulation 76 says the person supplying electricity to a connectable installation in a vehicle or relocatable building must check it has a current warrant first, which is why campgrounds ask to see the sticker. Regulation 77 says nobody may hire or lease out a van without one.

In the experience of Jordan Statham, The Conduction Company's director, the vast majority of caravan parks will not let a caravan or campervan connect without a WOF.

What are the requirements for an electrical WOF for a caravan?

Under AS/NZS 3001.2, a warrant is issued only once the installation has been inspected and tested and complies in all respects. The Conduction Company's inspector works through the standard's checklist:
Inspection. No exposed live parts or damaged equipment, no damage from water, the supply lead and plug in good order, and directly connected appliances safe to use.
Testing. Every RCD operates in both live conductors at no more than 30 mA, socket outlets and the supply lead have the right polarity, the earth is continuous to the chassis, and the insulation resistance passes.

It is an electrical check only, so it does not cover the gas system or the van's roadworthiness.

The sticker and the paperwork

Regulation 78 says the person issuing the warrant must fix the WOF sticker in a prominent place and keep a copy of the warrant for at least 3 years. The Conduction Company gives you the warrant and fixes the sticker before it leaves.

How long does an electrical warrant last on a caravan?

Four years. Under regulation 78, The Conduction Company's warrant runs for 4 years from the day it is issued, unless a newer warrant replaces it first. Check the date on the sticker before you book a powered site.

Who does electrical WOF on caravans?

Regulation 78 lets a person authorised to inspect mains work issue a warrant, or the person who certified electrical work on that installation. The Conduction Company's registered Electrical Inspector is Jordan Statham (EWRB registration I272615), who issued warrants of electrical fitness in previous inspector roles before founding the company.

Two ways to get your WOF

Drop it off at The Conduction Company in Onehunga

Book ahead, then bring the caravan, motorhome or food truck to The Conduction Company at 8A Rowe Street, Onehunga.

On site, wherever the van is parked

The Conduction Company comes to you anywhere in Auckland. The on-site price includes the call-out, the sticker and the certification.

When people book an electrical WOF

Buying a used caravan or motorhome

A sticker shows the van passed on the day it was issued, not what has happened to the wiring since. The Conduction Company's WOF tells you where it stands now.

Booking a powered site

Regulation 76 means the park has to see a current warrant, so an expired sticker usually means no power until The Conduction Company or another inspector issues a new one.

Putting a van on a hire fleet

Regulation 77 makes a current warrant a condition of hiring a van out, and The Conduction Company issues it van by van.

A food truck at a market or event

AS/NZS 3001.2 lists food and drink vending vans and trailers among the vehicles it covers. Regulation 76 applies to a connectable installation in a vehicle, so whoever supplies the power must check the warrant first, and The Conduction Company issues it.

A tiny home, cabin or site hut

AS/NZS 3001.2 covers relocatable units, including homes, cabins, huts and site offices, so The Conduction Company issues the same warrant for them.

When the van has had new wiring

When The Conduction Company certifies electrical work in a van, regulation 78 lets the warrant be issued at the same time as the certificate.

What if the van fails?

The Conduction Company tells you what failed and quotes the repair separately. It also finds faults in caravan wiring on the mains and 12-volt side, starting with electrical fault finding, then issues the warrant once the van passes.

If you meant your house

Houses are a different case: The Conduction Company never issues a WOF for one, because a house's wiring is permanent, not plugged in. For a check of a home's wiring, The Conduction Company offers a Certificate of Verification or an electrical safety inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Caravan Electrical WOF in Auckland

What are the electrical regulations for caravans in New Zealand?

Three regulations in the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 do most of the work, The Conduction Company explains. Regulation 76 says whoever supplies the power must check for a current warrant of electrical fitness before connecting, regulation 77 says a van cannot be hired out without one, and regulation 78 says who may issue it and that it lasts up to 4 years. The inspection itself follows AS/NZS 3001.2.

Is a motorhome or campervan electrical warrant of fitness any different?

No. AS/NZS 3001.2 lists caravans, camper vans and motor homes as recreational vehicles under the same rules, and The Conduction Company inspects all three.

Does a food truck need an electrical WOF?

In practice, yes, if it plugs into someone else's supply. AS/NZS 3001.2 covers food and drink vending vans and trailers, and regulation 76 says whoever supplies the power must check for a current warrant before connecting. The Conduction Company issues the same warrant for food trucks as for caravans.

Can a tiny home or cabin get an electrical WOF?

Yes, if it is built to be moved and plugs into a supply. AS/NZS 3001.2 covers relocatable units such as homes, cabins, huts and site offices, and The Conduction Company issues the same warrant for them.
