Inspecting high-risk electrical jobs in Auckland
The estimates below are for a standard independent Record of Inspection.
The Conduction Company confirms final pricing after a property assessment.
A Record of Inspection (RoI) is the certificate an independent Electrical Inspector issues after checking high-risk work, such as mains or grid-connected solar. The Conduction Company's registered Electrical Inspector inspects high-risk work across Auckland for $283.90 including GST, and lodges the record.
Has your job reached the inspection step?
A mains or solar job stays open until an inspector signs it off. The Conduction Company's registered Electrical Inspector inspects that work for electricians, solar installers and homeowners, issues the Record of Inspection, and lodges it. Every certificate type is on The Conduction Company's electrical inspection and certification page.
RoI electrical meaning: what is a Record of Inspection?
RoI stands for Record of Inspection. Every high-risk job has to be inspected under regulation 70 of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, and the inspector's written findings, required by regulation 72, are the RoI. It says whether the installation is safe now and will be once powered, and it carries the certificate of compliance with it, The Conduction Company explains.
So the RoI comes last. The installing electrician issues the CoC and ESC, then the inspector checks the work and issues the RoI. The Conduction Company covers the first two on its page for the electrical CoC and safety certificate.
What is high-risk electrical work in NZ?
Regulation 6A lists it. In most homes it comes down to two kinds of work, The Conduction Company says: mains work, which includes work on the main earth, and solar or other generation.
Electrical inspections of new mains
That covers a new mains cable or main earth, and a switchboard move that touches the mains. The Conduction Company explains when a board upgrade becomes high-risk work on its switchboard upgrades page.
Solar PV inspection
Any photovoltaic system is high-risk work under regulation 6A, grid-connected or off-grid, and so is a mains parallel generation system, such as a battery or generator that runs in parallel with the mains. The Conduction Company installs solar and battery systems in Auckland and inspects them in-house, apart from any job its inspector did or supervised.
Who carries out the inspection?
The Conduction Company's registered Electrical Inspector is Jordan Statham (EWRB registration I272615). He also holds the EWRB inspector endorsement for mains parallel generation systems (IMP 111326), the class that covers grid-connected solar and batteries, and inspects off-grid systems too.
Regulation 71(2) says nobody may inspect work they personally carried out, supervised, or certified. So Jordan inspects high-risk work done by The Conduction Company's other electricians, and by other firms, and never a job he did, supervised or certified himself. Where he did, an outside inspector is used. "That's a good thing. It keeps it fresh," he says. "The inspector should be viewing that with fresh eyes."
For electricians and solar installers: have this ready
The Conduction Company's pre-inspection checklist, from its own inspection quotes:
The main earth. Tagged at the board end of the main earth conductor, with the electrode's position written on the switchboard, and the electrode itself clamped tight, tagged and easy to reach.
The tests. Continuity of the main earth measured, no higher than the 0.5 ohm limit in AS/NZS 3017:2022, polarity of the mains confirmed using an independent earth, plus a measured earth fault loop impedance.
The board and the paperwork. A fully enclosed meterboard switch, if there is one, and the certificate of compliance on site, because the inspector attaches it to the record.
Unsure how something needs to be done? The Conduction Company is happy to confirm it first.
For homeowners told the job needs an inspection
Your electrician usually books the inspector, because the certificate of compliance has to be ready to attach. When The Conduction Company does your high-risk work, it arranges the inspection.
Is the RoI lodged on the high-risk database?
Yes. Regulation 74F says the inspector must lodge the details of high-risk work, including its certificate of compliance, on WorkSafe's database within 20 working days after the date of the record of inspection. The Conduction Company compiles the RoI and submits it to that database.
When the work is not ready to pass
The record must state whether the work was done in accordance with the regulations, so The Conduction Company's inspector does not pass work that is not ready. A return visit for missed items is charged as a re-inspection, and The Conduction Company may charge for time spent waiting while faults are fixed on the day.
Can an electrical inspector inspect their own work?
No, and The Conduction Company's inspector never does. Regulation 71(2) of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 says a person may not inspect work they personally carried out, supervised, or issued the certificate of compliance for. So The Conduction Company brings in an outside inspector for any job its own inspector did, supervised or certified.
Why choose The Conduction Company for an RoI?
The Conduction Company has an inspector endorsed for grid-connected solar, a fixed price said up front, and more than 600 Google reviews at a 5.0 rating from Auckland clients. It is a Master Electricians member.

Frequently Asked Questions
High-Risk Electrical Work: Independent Record of Inspection
Is AS/NZS 3000 current?
Yes. AS/NZS 3000:2018, known as the Wiring Rules, is the current edition, read with its three amendments from January 2020, April 2021 and May 2023. The Conduction Company's inspector checks high-risk work against the regulations and the standard it was built to.
Can the electrician who did my job also inspect it?
Not under the law. An inspector cannot sign off a job they did, supervised, or issued the certificate of compliance for (regulation 71(2)). When Jordan Statham has worked on a job himself, The Conduction Company brings in an outside inspector.
What do they check on an electrical inspection?
On a Record of Inspection, The Conduction Company's inspector looks at the high-risk job against the regulations and the standard it was built to, from the main earth and polarity to earth fault loop impedance, and needs the certificate of compliance to hand.
Where do I find my electrical certificate?
Start with whoever did the work. They must keep a copy of the certificate of compliance for at least 7 years under regulation 74E, and The Conduction Company emails a copy of any certificate it issued when you ask.
Does The Conduction Company do the RoI for meter work?
No. Meter work is outside The Conduction Company's inspections: a Network Warranted Electrical Inspector handles that RoI, and the team does the meterboard work around the meter.
Who books the inspector, the electrician or the homeowner?
Usually the electrician who did the work, because the inspector attaches their certificate of compliance to the record. When The Conduction Company does your high-risk work, it arranges the inspection.
Can The Conduction Company inspect and certify high risk electrical work in house?
Yes. Jordan Statham holds registration as an Electrical Inspector, so The Conduction Company can inspect high-risk work and write the record that regulation 72 calls for. Regulation 71 keeps it independent: he never inspects a job he did, supervised or certified, and an outside inspector covers those.
