Spa pool, swim spa and sauna wiring in Auckland
The Conduction Company does spa pool, swim spa and sauna wiring in Auckland, from a 15 amp spa outlet to a hardwired supply with its own isolator, and wires pool equipment too. The estimates below are for standard installation of a spa pool power connection. The Conduction Company confirms final pricing after a property assessment.
The Conduction Company's 15 amp spa connections typically cost $600 to $1,400 including GST. Larger spas and large swim spas need a hardwired supply with a lockable isolator and heavier cable, which costs more. The Conduction Company protects every spa supply with a 30 mA RCD.
Getting a Spa, Swim Spa or Sauna?
The Conduction Company checks your switchboard, picks the right supply for the spa, and certifies the work once the spa is connected.
The spa advice on this page comes from Jordan Statham, director of The Conduction Company, a registered electrician and electrical inspector. The rules, running costs and paperwork are set out in full in The Conduction Company's guide to spa pool electrical requirements in NZ.
How much does a spa pool electrical connection cost?
It depends on the size of the spa and where it will sit, in The Conduction Company's experience. "A simple small spa located near a perimeter wall of the home can be very low cost and straightforward," Jordan Statham says. A large swim spa on a custom deck or concrete pad can need far more cable, a bigger isolator and much more labour. The Conduction Company prices the electrical connection, not the spa itself.
We quote on facts, not guesses
Before we give you a price, we carry out a proper assessment of your property and how you'll use your spa pool.
That way you know exactly what you're buying and the total cost, with no surprises.
Clear expectations from the outset, start to finish.

The Conduction Company's spa connection prices, from its own completed Auckland jobs:
15 amp spa outlet: typically $600 to $1,400 including GST
Simple 15 amp outlet looped off an existing circuit, one visit: $563.90 including GST
Large swim spa in Titirangi, hardwired with a long cable run through the garage ceiling and under the decking: $2,210.47 including GST
Sauna and pool shed supplies: priced on the job
In most cases the spa's protection fits on your existing switchboard. An old switchboard, especially with old-style cabling, may need upgrading first, and The Conduction Company has seen owners buy a spa and then find the house needed a full rewire before it could be connected. So the team looks behind the switchboard while it assesses the spa job, and quotes are typically free. Ask The Conduction Company for a spa connection quote before you buy.
Plug-in or hardwired: which supply does your spa need?
Most smaller home spas now run on a 15 amp plug-in supply, The Conduction Company finds. They keep the current down by load shedding: the heater does not run while the jets are on, and in most cases owners notice no difference. The 15 amp outlet can go in before the spa arrives. Larger spas, spas with several heaters and large swim spas are hardwired to a lockable isolator with heavier cable. That needs a second visit to connect the spa once it is in place, ideally on delivery day.
A plug-in spa's cord can be a trip hazard where it crosses open ground. If the spa sits out in the open, The Conduction Company can fit an isolator instead and run the cable under the decking and up into the spa. It looks tidier and takes a little more work.
Whichever supply you have, The Conduction Company protects it with an RCD rated at no more than 30 mA. Under AS/NZS 3000, an RCD in New Zealand must be Type A, F or B and break both the active and the neutral. A spa also needs a way to cut its power for maintenance. A plug and socket counts, and so does an isolator, but an isolator mounted away from the spa must lock in the off position. Jordan Statham, as an electrical inspector, reads the Wiring Rules as requiring a hardwired spa's lockable isolator to sit beside the spa, not on it.
What does a swim spa electrical hookup involve?
For a swim spa installation, The Conduction Company runs cable from the switchboard, adds the circuit protection there, and fits an isolator or a plug and socket at the swim spa. Cable run underground goes in conduit for mechanical protection, and cable under a deck is fixed with pin clips. On one large swim spa in Titirangi, The Conduction Company ran a 32 amp circuit in 6 mm cable to a 40 amp isolator. The cable went through the garage ceiling, under the decking and along the pad in conduit, and the team came back on delivery day to connect the spa.
Does The Conduction Company dig the trench and arrange the concrete pad?
It depends on the spa company, The Conduction Company finds. Some supply the full package, trench and concrete pad included. In most cases The Conduction Company digs the trench itself, and it backfills every trench it uses, because the cable goes in conduit with warning tape above it. AS/NZS 3000 requires underground wiring to be marked with orange marker tape at about half its depth of cover. Where the spa company does not supply the pad, The Conduction Company can organise one as part of the quote.
How does The Conduction Company wire a home sauna?
For a sauna installation at home, The Conduction Company runs a circuit from the switchboard to a local isolator, so the heater can be switched off for servicing. Then it wires in the sauna heater or its controller. An indoor sauna is usually the simpler job. An outdoor sauna gets a weatherproof plug and socket, or, away from the house, a hardwired supply brought in underground through a trench. Cost comes down to access. Open underfloor or ceiling space keeps it lower, while a townhouse with a mid floor and the switchboard in the middle of the home can mean cutting into plasterboard or running surface trunking.
AS/NZS 3000 keeps sockets and switches out of the sauna room, except those that are part of the heater, and puts everything in the room other than the heater on a 30 mA RCD. It also makes the heater maker's installation instructions binding, so if they call for a dedicated circuit, the sauna gets one. The Conduction Company checks the heater's manual before it plans the wiring.
Does The Conduction Company wire pool sheds and pool equipment?
Yes. For a swimming pool, The Conduction Company runs a dedicated cable from the main switchboard to the pool shed and fits a weatherproof distribution board there. Each pump, heater and lighting transformer then gets its own circuit and protection. The pool's light cable usually runs back to the shed in the pool installer's pipe trenches, and the lights can be switched from a phone or from a switch inside the house.
Bonding needs planning before the concrete is poured. Where a pool's shell or deck is conductive, AS/NZS 3000 requires its reinforcing steel to be bonded, and once the concrete is in, that steel is extremely hard to reach. Not every pool company understands this, Jordan Statham says, so The Conduction Company plans the cable runs and the bonding before the pour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Spa pool, swim spa and sauna wiring in Auckland
What's the standard power supply for a spa pool, and can it just use a normal outdoor outlet?
For most smaller home spas it is a 15 amp outlet, which The Conduction Company protects with a 30 mA RCD. A normal outdoor power point will not do, because a spa's 15 amp plug has a larger earth pin than a standard 10 amp socket takes.
Does a spa pool need a dedicated circuit?
Not always, in The Conduction Company's experience. A simple plug-in spa's 15 amp outlet can be looped off an existing circuit, with new protection added at the switchboard. Larger and hardwired spas get their own circuit from the switchboard, sized for the spa.
Can I wire a spa pool myself?
No. Spa, pool and sauna wiring is prescribed electrical work for a licensed electrician, and the homeowner exemption does not cover spa pools, swimming pools or saunas, says The Conduction Company.
Ready to talk about your next project?
Assess the Site
The Conduction Company looks at where the spa will sit and checks your switchboard at the same visit, so any extra cost is known before you buy.
Run the Supply
The Conduction Company runs the cable, in conduit with marker tape where it goes underground, and fits the outlet or isolator with RCD protection.
Connect and Certify
The Conduction Company connects the spa and issues a certificate of compliance and an electrical safety certificate, which can be combined in one document.
